![]() ![]() "It is not general knowledge in Estonia - and it never will be - all the things that Finland has done for Estonia," he said. It was one of the few instances in his life when he spoke of Finland's carefully-concealed support for Estonian sovereignty. One month after Estonia declared independence, Koivisto was interviewed by the Estonian public broadcaster. "He wrote less than 100 pages on the Baltic countries in his memoirs, but didn't mention Minister Kasurinen or Finnish funding for Estonia once," says Rausmaa. Later in his life, Koivisto refrained from speaking about his personal relationship with Estonia and the events of the early 1990s. Future Estonian President Lennart Meri worked there when news broke of the "singing revolution" breaking though in August 1991. The Ministry decided to fund the Tuglas Society and the Finnish-Estonian Cultural Association, whose office in Helsinki became the fledgling country's informal mission and support base. Kasurinen reportedly asked Koivisto how much help Finland could give to Estonia, to which Koivisto replied: "Well, you can practice a lot of things in the name of culture." Behind closed doors she was called the Estonian affairs minister. Education and Culture Minister Anna-Liisa Kasurinen was given responsibility for the program. "Finland's old constitutional law stipulated that all of the responsibility for foreign policy lay with the president, so without Koivisto's decision, the aid couldn't have been delivered," Rausmaa says.įinland extended money to Estonia under the cover of cultural cooperation. In addition to this material support, Finland provided expert consultation and training to its southern neighbour, which basically had to build a market economy and the system of democratic rule from scratch. Rausmaa's studies show that Finland contributed over 100 million Finnish marks towards Estonian independence by the year 1991. He did this in public because he thought that it was in Finland's best interests to maintain a good relationship with Moscow," says historian and researcher Heikki Rausmaa, who defended a doctoral dissertation on Finland's aid to Estonia in 2013. "Many Finns are bitter about how cold-heartedly Koivisto treated Estonia. To stay on the right side of the Soviets, however, the money had to look as if it did not originate from the Finnish state. Estonia had declared sovereignty, and Finland's political elite had decided to support Estonian independence as much as possible. In reality, Finland's decision to help Estonia had already made behind the scenes three years earlier. "We cannot interfere in the internal affairs of the Soviet Union," Koivisto said publicly in 1991, "Finland has de facto recognised the Baltic States' integration into the USSR, and we will adhere to everything that has been internationally agreed." When he was President of Finland, Mauno Koivisto sent financial support to Estonia in the guise of cultural cooperation funds to avoid drawing attention from Moscow. ![]()

![]() Unlike others, which are specific to some nations or religions, this one is almost global. On the other hand, the myth of the Phoenix is one of the best known in all cultures. In any case, it is a known story, but it is also true that little is known about its origin. Those who do not know the story have surely heard the myth or saying of “he was reborn as the Phoenix”. Most have ever heard the myth of that strange bird, made of fire and with a striking figure, which is reborn from its own ashes after having disappeared. That is why it symbolizes the already described power of resilience to come out of problems strengthened.įew people are currently unaware of the story of the Phoenix. The Phoenix is an iconic fire creature that, as mentioned, is capable of majestically soaring from the ashes of its own destruction. The myth, then, associates this creature with the resilience capacity that many people have that ability to find solutions to adverse situations that life presents them and, like the Phoenix bird, to be reborn from the ashes that that problem left them. Other birds arrived from China, and with time Sado had a large enough population to consider reintroducing the toki to the wild.īut first they had to tackle the use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides on Sado. The Phoenix bird is known to be that c reature that supposedly rises from its own ashes. You You and Yang Yang arrived the following year on first-class seats, producing their first chick months later in an event that led national television broadcasts. Sado's captive birds failed to mate, but China's program had more success, and when then-Chinese president Jiang Zemin made a historic first state visit in 1998 he offered Japan the gift of a pair of toki. The chemicals affected the birds and their food, and by 1981 just five wild toki remained in Japan, all on Sado, where officials took them into protective captivity.īut by bizarre coincidence, the same year a population of seven wild toki was discovered in a remote area of China's Shaanxi province, reviving hopes for the bird's survival. Toki feed primarily in rice paddies that mimic marshy wetland habitats and they are undiscriminating diners, eating everything from insects to small crabs and frogs. Her death made national headlines and appeared to mark the end of a long and seemingly futile battle to protect the toki in Japan, where its feathers even inspire the word for peach pink: "toki-iro".īut now so many roam the skies and rice paddies of Sado that local officials have gone from discouraging eager birdwatchers to training guides to help visitors spot the local icon, and the government is even studying reintroducing the bird elsewhere.Ī small population of toki were found in China and a successful breeding programme allowed the birds to be reintroduced to Sado. "But it was still a real pity."Įfforts to get Kin to mate with Sado's last wild-born male toki Midori-meaning "green"-had long since failed, and she lived out her last years as a curiosity and a cautionary environmental tale. She was very old and frail," Tsuchiya said. Her death meant not a single wild-born toki was left in Japan, despite the bird being so synonymous with the country that it is also known as the Japanese crested ibis. Some days dozens of the birds appear in one area, something unimaginable in 2003, when a toki called Kin or "gold" died in a cage on Sado at the record-breaking age of 36. "The number I see at this spot depends on the season," he explains. Timeline showing how efforts to save the Japanese crested ibis has unfolded. A deep peeling edge does have a downside if your ear of corn is on the smaller side since in this situation the peeler will also remove some of the cobs. The depth of the peeling edge determines how much of the kernel the stripper can remove, with the deeper the edge, the bigger the kernel it can remove.
